Take Thought Out of Your Preshot Equation Letter From A Master Tell Joe "The Monk sent you New DVD Launches
Shoot Without ThinkingI am not one to recommend you shoot "consciously". I think we need to reach a place in our game where we shoot with "no thought". Our efforts come from our training. We prepare in the same way so we are in a "condition" when we deliver the stroke. It is much like a warrior who works himself into a pitch to raise his strength beyond his normal self.Of course this comes from repetition. And we must train the right way. We must train in such a way that we can build the solid foundation that will serve us when the game is on the line. In other words, for the great warrior the game is always on the line, therefore he is always prepared. He does not take missing lightly, in practice, in games, in matches, and in tournaments. The true warrior is always prepared to deliver the final blow. I feel like my training programs help you develop this kind of focus. I do not waste a students time working on fancy shots, or meaningless masses. We work on our stroke for that is the weapon of the great ones. I heard a player bragging about another players stroke. He said, "He looks good even when he misses. He is the only player who can make a miss look good." The ultimate ability one can possess is the stroke. I have been in training with my Masters. I am doing the same program they are. The Master of Art in Pocket Billiards is designed to take you through twelve levels. You stay in one level for about a month. Every four days, you report in. The report goes to all the Masters so you get feedback from some of the best minds in this game today. After taking four years off I thought I was finished. I am blind in one eye and have problems with my feet. Going through this special training has brought me back to life. My numbers are very good. I can see where I will once again be a master player. All of my training centers around the stroke, and how to deliver this wonderful tool with "no thought".
Here is a letter from a masterWhile running this routine of making the straight in stop shot, and breaking through some mind barriers (last run was 51), I found a new level of concentration. It goes like this - As I am lining up the shot, I tell myself that this shot is how I present myself to the world. It is me on display, not a ball and pocket. So, my task is to perform with courage to show my confident inner-self I belong in this game. I tell myself that this is the last shot I will ever shoot and how do I want to remember myself - not by the make or miss but by the way I conduct myself in the process. It reminds me of the saying in golf that goes "it's not how but how many". This is the exact opposite of how it is. It is not how many strokes one takes, it is how they conduct themselves with others. To test this, I ask players what the other guy shot the last time they played. To a person, they do not know. So, I ask them how the other guy conducted himself. Instantly, they reply with a brief description of what they thought of the guy as a person "he's a lot of laughs", "he throws his cue", "he swears too much", "he's a lot of fun and a good pool player", etc. Well, I now have experienced that from the inside in pool and it applies across the board. I have a sense that this awareness is somewhere on the path of what you refer to as "becoming the shot". There is a lot of satisfaction just knowing that I shot that shot with my full character and skills on display.
