Help From The Monk, Issue #039 Go First Class All The Way August 23, 2004 |
|
Issue No. 39WelcomeUnder four, That's our goal
Help From The Monk, formerly "The Monk Reloaded should be read within four minutes. I don’t want to overload you so I keep this weekly lesson short and to the point. Without further introductions, let's get right into it:
Go first class all the wayThe game changes when we reach the semi finals or the finals. Some of us suddenly become more desperate. We can hear the little things around us and become distracted easily. Our stroke is not crisp, clear, nor does it serve us when we need it most. The object ball begins to jar and hang in the pocket. The safeties leave our opponent straight in shots. Pressure changes the way we perform.
Suddenly we are fighting hard just to stay in the game. We long for the earlier matches where we could make balls with clear purpose and had confidence to play the aggressive shots that win games.
We have changed our mind set. We have changed the value of the game. The balls are the same. The pockets are the same. The clothe, the rails, the environment is the same, yet all seems so different. We are in a strange area where we have little experience. Now is the time to learn how to perform under the pressure of winning tournaments. Don’t let the lessons of the semi or the finals be lost in our own insecurity. Relax and embrace the experience. Go first class.
First you must welcome the anxiety. You have reached this place because of your fine play. Be glad you are here. Enjoy the moment. When you make up your mind to enjoy something, you reduce the fear it has over you. It’s like standing in front of a bully and saying with a forced smile on your face, “Oh ya, lets take this dance outside”.
What you need to learn about playing under pressure is that there is no pressure. Nothing has changed. Everything remains the same. So you must continue to play the same way, approach the game the same as you did earlier and go about your business as only you know how. Learning how to play in the semis or the finals is not an easy task.
I lost many matches around the fourth position because I changed the value when I faced a difficult shot. I saw more key balls. There was more on the line. I was faced with getting into the finals. It was not just another match to move me closer to the money.
I did a two things wrong when I reached the semi finals. One, I saw it
as a match that was more important then the others. Two, I fooled
myself into thinking I have already made it to the money and have a
trophy coming. I thought I was already a success. This is not a first
class approach. When we reach the semi or the finals, we must go first
class.
