Help From The Monk, Issue #038 Talk The Shot August 17, 2004 |
|
Issue No. 38WelcomeUnder four, That's our goal
Help From The Monk, formerly "The Monk Reloaded should be read within four minutes. I don’t want to overload you so I keep this weekly lesson short and to the point. Without further introductions, let's get right into it:
Talk The ShotsI asked one of my students to verbalize the nature of each shot.
Declare the exact location of the cue tip on the cue ball.
“Do you want me to tell you what I am thinking”? She asked.
When you verbalize your intentions, you coordinate your mind/ body to perform. You increase your concentration and become one with the shot.
“I am going to hit the object ball one quarter inch to the right. This will not be enough to pocket the ball, so I will be using one quarter inch right English on the cue ball so I can throw the object ball more to the left. In order to control my throw, I will use a snip draw.” I have just declared to my mind, exactly what I want to do. Now it is up to me to do this. Once I succeed I then logged that experience in my pool mind. I replay the successful shot as I rise up from the shooting position and prepare to do it all again on the next shot.
When you practice concentration you must experience the keen focus of your efforts. That which you focus on, you strengthen. To verbalize and then do it is the best way to sharpen your concentration powers.
Finish The JobIn the game of nine ball, we often turn into shot makers when we reach the seven eight or nine. These three balls seem to give us the most trouble. We lose the most games when we reach the seven eight or nine ball. Stop losing games at this stage. The next time you face a tough seven decide to play a safety. Don’t shoot a tough seven to get on a tough eight. “A good safety is leaving your opponent a long bank shot. It is better to leave a shot for your opponent than to leave another safety on the table.”
If you entice your opponent to try a hard shot, you will end up with hangers more often. Do not be afraid to duck on the eight or nine. It is during this stage that most games are won or lost. Make it hard for your opponent to win. Be a nine ball player who does not give away games. You will be surprised by how many hangers you face when you play that way. If we meet in the finals you can be sure I will fall for a tough shot. I will think I can make it and then run out. I have been known to be foolishly aggressive and several of my students have taken advantage of that nature. I missed a really tough seven ball once and my opponent laughed out load. I wish I could learn from The Monk.
