Aiming, your own system July 27, 2008 |
Aim true and make the shotAll players have a unique form of vision. In other words, we see things in different ways. I have a shot where I have to aim to over cut it. When I am cutting a ball back to my right, I cannot properly see that shot. Experience has led me to over cut it and I make it every time. This is simply a matter of my vision. I compensate for it and find success.
One time a student could not hit a rail shot I had set up for him. I asked for center ball, one half below center and a punch stroke. He continued to pinch the ball every time. Then I asked for a slight right of center hit and he nailed it consistently. What he thought was center ball turned out to be slightly left of center. Before I discovered this flaw in his vision he became frustrated and threw his cue on the floor. With that, he headed towards the exit. While I watched him walk away I couldn’t help but notice he had a big ass. Actually, you could say he had a fat ass. I told him he would lose all his tuition money if he walked out. He stopped and I could see his fat ass shaking with the sudden stop. When he stopped the ass cheeks were still in motion. Then he returned and we discovered his vision flaw. I wish I could say that we had a great session from that point on but it was not. I do write about him in Focus on Winning. You will know this Student from Hell as Fat Ass.
Learn to adjust to your own unique style of vision. This is why I don’t go into specific details on the fine art of aiming. We all see things differently so one form of aiming won’t work for another.
The most important thing you will ever do in pocket billiards is hit the cue ball. So you want to be totally sure you hit the cue ball exactly where you intend to. Joe Tucker has a unique device that enables you to strike center ball every time. When I used it I marveled at how lazy I had become. I had to re learn my center ball techniques. Get a hold of Joe and order this device.
The point of aim changes when you are using English to assist the shot. The point of aim changes when you are using cue ball speed or specific strokes. Because of this we can’t give you a dependable principle when it comes to aiming.
You must be in a good stance or you will not be able to see the shot. The eye sees the shot from the perspective of “can we make it or not”. If you are standing off line, the eye cannot see the shot. Have you ever lined up for a shot, knew you were not going to make it, and still shot it anyways? You were not standing properly. I need to stand up right on cut shots. I need to be low to the cue ball on long shots. I need to be just off the cue ball on draw shots. Years of training has helped me master these unique personal traits.
The beauty of the shots found in The Lesson is that they put you in position to learn and develop your own style. If you are not making the shot as it is presented to you, you need to make an adjustment and it is this adjustment that enables you to develop a great stroke.
