Choking understood
If you are the type of player who excels at your game, you will also be prone to crumble under pressure. A choker is an extremely intelligent player. Studies show that individuals with high working memory capacity crack under pressure. Those with high working memory capacity often excel at everything yet they do worse when the game is on the line. An intelligent person more likely will be affected by pressure.
Pressure causes worries. And we tend to verbalize these concerns. “I can’t screw up here” we begin to think as we are running out for the winning game. This thought comes from our memory bank. Our thoughts take up space that should be reserved for the task at hand. Once you begin to worry about results you are in trouble. You have invited memory back into your mind and it is from our mind-set we act, we think, we perform. A player with a lower working-memory capacity will not recall the failures of the past so therefore they are not affected by pressure. They simply go about their business.
I have contracted a Fung Shui Master from Singapore to speak at my Secrets Revealed Tour. We have been working on the Fung Shui techniques for finding that zone where we perform with no thought. He is a fascinating man who studied under the great masters of Tibet and India as well as China.
If you try to hold memory information and begin to worry about performance, you cannot use your entire mental capacity to perform. The stroke, minus the interference equals the shot. Read my book Point the Way. Your working memory, which is your short-term memory capabilities, contains information from an earlier experience and this will effect how you deliver your stroke for the shot that wins the games.
Michigan State University did a study. They tested High Working Memory students in a low-pressure situation and got great scores. The Low Working Memory students tested low in this low-pressure situation. Then the High Working Memory students were tested in a high-pressure situation and the University found that these students scored the same as the Low Working Memory students.
If you are a High Working Memory player how do we combat this tendency to score low when the pressure is on? I believe you are a High Working Memory Player or you would not be reading this article nor would you subscribe to my newsletter. You do tend to have problems with key ball and scoring high in pressure situations.
